Celebrating Safe Menstruation Day: A Step Towards a Period-Friendly World

Every year on May 28, the world comes together to celebrate Safe Menstruation Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about menstrual health and hygiene (MHH). This year’s international slogan, “Let’s stand together for a period-friendly world,” encapsulates the global effort to empower, educate, and advocate for better menstrual health for all.

In Tanzania, the national celebration took place in Arusha, gathering various MHH stakeholders to highlight the importance of this day. The event was graced by the Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Godwin Mollel (Mb), who emphasized the critical need for male involvement, the establishment of period-friendly infrastructure in schools, and access to affordable, reusable pads. He pointed out that education on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and Adolescents Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR), coupled with increased investment in these areas, is essential for the well-being of young girls.

Afyaplus Organization, represented by our Program Coordinator, was proud to celebrate World Menstrual Health Day in Arusha. Our organization has been at the forefront of promoting menstrual health through various initiatives, including the Safe Pad Lab Project. This project aims to dismantle the barriers school girls face during menstruation and enhance awareness of good MHM and ASRHR practices.

The Safe Pad Lab Project has reached over 35,000 school girls, surpassing its initial goal of 30,600. Operating primarily in Iringa, we have successfully implemented our menstrual initiatives in 62 schools. Empowerment begins with education, and our efforts focus on breaking the stigma around menstruation, advocating for accessible facilities, and providing affordable menstrual products.

Celebrating at Lugalo Secondary School

On Safe Menstruation Day, Afyaplus had an inspiring visit to Lugalo Secondary School, where we conducted an MHM awareness campaign for the girls and distributed reusable sanitary pads. These pads were made by some of the students through the Safe Pad Lab project, which offers a dedicated space for students to produce their reusable pads.

The campaign at Lugalo Secondary School successfully raised awareness about the significance of safe menstruation, the benefits it brings, the roles of various stakeholders, and the importance of celebrating Safe Menstruation Day annually. By educating young girls about MHM and ASRHR, we are fostering a supportive environment that empowers them to manage their menstruation with dignity and confidence.

Together, we are breaking stereotypes, promoting hygiene, and ensuring that every girl’s journey through menstruation is safe and valued. Afyaplus Organization stands committed to creating a period-friendly world through continuous education, advocacy, and the provision of essential menstrual health resources.

This Safe Menstruation Day, and every day, let’s stand together to empower, educate, and advocate for menstrual health and hygiene for all. By doing so, we are paving the way for a brighter, healthier future for every girl.
