Suzan Yumbe is a passionate Health Officer with a six-year track record of success in the Clean Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector. After working as a health officer at Mwanza City Council for two years, Suzan founded AFYAPLUS in 2017, an organization that focuses on promoting girls’ and young women’s health by educating them on water sanitation, hygiene interventions, and economic empowerment. She strongly believes that access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene awareness is crucial to prevent WASH-related diseases, reduce government expenditure on treating preventable diseases, and improve girls’ and women’s attendance in schools and economic developments. Suzan’s contributions to the sector have earned her national and international recognition, including being awarded the Innovator of the Year 2018 of the SADC region and the impactful Leadership certificate by YALI. In 2019, she was also recognized as one of Tanzania’s SHE HEROEs by The Launch Pad organization and voted as 2019 most influential young Tanzanian in Leadership and Civil Society by Advance Media Africa.

Dr. Hussein L. Mohamed is a Professor at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and serves as the chair of the Afyaplus Board in Tanzania. With over a decade of experience in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), climate change, and public and environmental health, he is an accomplished Researcher and Consultant who provides technical expertise to the government and UN Agencies. He is currently serving as a country technical advisor in a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project through UNDP on Healthcare Waste Management, implemented by the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children. Dr. H Mohamed has also provided consultancy services to various UN organizations, including UNICEF, WaterAid, UNDP, KOICA, and Plan International. He is a member of the ongoing project Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) Programme in Africa: Building Resilience in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Food Security, and Health through Climate Services, funded by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and WHO.

Miriam L. Laiser was appointed as Board member and treasurer of Afyaplus organization in July 2020. She bring over 12 years of experience of being Child and Youth Development Advisor at Compassion International. She is also a Founder/Director of Unique Child Academy and Inclusive Education Consultant, Buyegi trust funds and she is finalizing her PHD studies of inclusive Education.

Severine Allute has a broad professional competency in Governance and Development, proven experience in Water, Sanitation, Hygiene governance in Urban and Rural Water Supply Policy, and WASH Commercialization Outcomes. He was appointed as board member in 10th July, 2020.He has a range of professional development in business development, water security, and peacebuilding policy outcomes. He is currently working as Tanzania Menstrual Health and Hygiene Coalition Secretariat Lead, Vice President for the Africa Diaspora Foundation based in Los Angeles California, Director of Africa Dignity Forum, a Policy and Sector Engagement Consultant for Water Security in Tanzania taking lead in coordination and management of the execution of research, policy advocacy and sector engagement agenda for the Water Sector in Tanzania to achieve the SDGs 2030 targets.

Benedict F. Kikove was appointed as a member of Afyaplus Board in July 2020. He brings over 8 years of experience as an expert in Law and International Relations. He is working as a Senior Advisor for Politics and Public Relations – Japan Embassy in Tanzania. He is also a Deputy Chairperson – UN Association of Tanzania. Benedict is also a member of Board of Tanzania Boy Scout Association and Msichana Initiative Organization. According to Benedict, “it is an honor to be able to work together with the Afyaplus Organization”.
