Hope Beneath the Surface – A Water Survey in Mangalali Village

This May, Afyaplus Organization, in close partnership with Drilcorp (T) Limited, embarked on a vital mission in Mangalali Village—a mission to uncover hope beneath the ground. With support from Engineers Without Borders – MSU Chapter, we conducted a detailed underground water survey to identify a viable site for drilling a borehole, a step toward creating a community water distribution system that could change lives.

For decades, the people of Mangalali have depended on the Tanangozi Water Scheme, a system constructed over 60 years ago to serve nine villages. Mangalali, being the last on the distribution line, is often left with little or no water. The community currently receives water only once a week for 2–3 hours, a frequency that is far from sufficient given today’s growing population and rising demand.

💧 Water is life—but access in Mangalali has been anything but consistent. Supply from the scheme varies greatly—slightly better during rainy seasons, but critically low in the dry months. Despite having nearby potential water sources, outdated infrastructure and limited investments have left the village struggling.

During the survey, our team also collected water samples from all critical points—from the source to the furthest distribution terminal. The findings highlighted the urgent need for modern, reliable solutions. For the residents of Mangalali, water scarcity is more than an inconvenience—it’s a daily burden. Families walk long distances to fetch water, often from unsafe sources. The impact ripples through the community: from poor hygiene and health risks to reduced school attendance and compromised livelihoods.

At Afyaplus, we believe that access to clean, safe water is not just a basic need—it’s a human right, and a foundation for health, dignity, and progress.

The successful identification of a borehole site marks the beginning of a transformative journey for Mangalali. With the promise of clean water on the horizon, we are one step closer to building a healthier, more resilient, and empowered community.

We are deeply grateful to all our partners and supporters. This project is more than just drilling a borehole—it’s about restoring hope, dignity, and opportunity.

Together, we are turning water scarcity into water security—one village at a time.
