We are thrilled to announce our new partnership with Nawiri Foundation, aiming to enhancing School Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SWASH) services for primary schools in the Mbeya region, specifically in the Mbarali District Council. Through this partnership, we aim to address critical gaps in school hygiene and sanitation by supporting the renovation of toilets, constructing handwashing stations, installing water tank towers, providing essential water storage facilities, and leading sensitization sessions on SWASH services and hygienic practices.
Schools are not just centers for learning; they are spaces where children spend a significant portion of their day and absorb values that shape their future. For many children, these early lessons influence lifelong health, hygiene habits, and social skills. Despite the essential role schools play, however, only 38% have an adequate number of latrines, 20% have water facilities on-site, and less than 10% have fully functional handwashing stations with a reliable water supply. This lack of facilities directly impacts students’ learning, health, and overall development, with girls and boys often experiencing different challenges that may affect their educational outcomes.
Our partnership with Nawiri Foundation is a proactive step towards addressing these challenges and building a safer, cleaner, and more inclusive environment for children. Here’s how we’ll bring this vision to life at Magigiwe Primary School:
1. Handwashing Stations: Two new handwashing stations will be built—one near the kitchen and another by the toilets—enabling students to practice proper hand hygiene conveniently.
2. Water Storage Tower: A water storage tower will be constructed to ensure a consistent supply of clean water. Additionally, a 10,000-liter water tank will be installed to support the school’s water needs, with additional tanks provided for Mapogoro, Mlungu, and Msangaji Primary Schools.
3. SWASH Sensitization Sessions: Over four months, we will conduct comprehensive awareness sessions based on the SWASH curriculum. These sessions will equip students and staff with the knowledge and practices to maintain high hygiene standards and incorporate them into daily routines.
This 7-month project reflects our joint commitment to creating a lasting impact on the school community and fostering a strong foundation of hygiene, health, and dignity for students. By building a safe, sanitary environment, we empower children to reach their full potential in a supportive setting. We extend our deepest gratitude to Nawiri Foundation for joining us in this mission and for their invaluable support in advancing our shared vision.
Together, we are working towards a future where every child can learn and grow in a safe, hygienic, and inclusive environment.
