Engineers Without Borders from Michigan State University Chapter Visit to Mangalali Village, Tanzania

As the year draws to a close, Afyaplus is proud to celebrate a remarkable partnership with Engineers Without Borders – Michigan State University Chapter (MSU), supporting a transformative water installation project in Mangalali village, Iringa DC. This initiative aims to tackle the longstanding challenge of limited access to clean and safe water in the community, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for all.

In advancing our mission, we had the distinct honor of visiting Ruaha Catholic University (RUCU), where we engaged in discussions with Rev. Prof. Pius Mgeni, Vice Chancellor, and Dr. Bernard Mwakisunga, Head of the Environmental Health Science Department. Their insights and expertise reinforced our commitment to finding sustainable solutions for water accessibility challenges in Mangalali. We deeply appreciate RUCU’s unwavering support and partnership, which continues to drive impactful change.

Our journey also led us to the office of the Iringa District Commissioner, Hon. Kheri James, where we introduced our esteemed guests from Engineers Without Borders MSU. The Commissioner recognized Afyaplus as one of the leading organizations making a difference in Iringa, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the project at all levels. This collaboration highlights the power of collective efforts in addressing pressing community needs.

Community Engagement:

To ensure a project that truly meets the needs of Mangalali residents, we hosted a community meeting alongside the Afyaplus team, RUCU, Engineers Without Borders MSU, and local leaders. The meeting fostered meaningful discussions, allowing residents to voice their concerns and aspirations for improved water access. It was an inspiring gathering filled with positivity, joy, and hope, as the community eagerly welcomed the project.

Our team also conducted focus group discussions with ward leaders, community members, and Village Water Committees. These dialogues were crucial in identifying existing water challenges and exploring practical, community-led solutions. Through shared knowledge and experience, we are working towards ensuring a reliable, sustainable water distribution system that will serve both households and critical institutions such as schools and dispensaries.

Assessing the Water Crisis

A significant part of the project involved conducting a household survey to assess water shortages, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) conditions, and water usage patterns in Mangalali. Additionally, we collected water samples to test quality and determine the best approaches for sustainable solutions.

One key discovery was the Tanangozi water scheme, a system built 60 years ago to supply water to nine villages, including Mangalali. However, with growing populations and increasing demand, the scheme now struggles to provide sufficient water, leaving Mangalali with only a few hours of water access per week. Understanding these challenges enables us to develop a strategic plan to address water scarcity effectively.

As our assessment phase concludes, we are inspired by the resilience and enthusiasm of the Mangalali community. Their commitment to making this project a success fuels our determination to deliver sustainable water solutions that will positively impact lives for generations to come.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Engineers Without Borders MSU for their incredible generosity and dedication to this mission. Your support is invaluable in making sustainable water access a reality for Mangalali. Special appreciation also goes to Ruaha Catholic University for their unwavering partnership throughout this journey.

This project embodies the essence of collaboration, innovation, and community empowerment. As we strive to achieve SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation for All, we remain committed to ensuring that every individual in Mangalali has access to safe, reliable water.

Together, we are creating a future where water scarcity is no longer a barrier to health, education, and development. Teamwork makes the dream work!
